True Colors was created in 1978 by Don Lowry, who studied prior personality assessments such as Myers Briggs and David Keirsey’s wanted to create a similar assessment that was easier for people to remember. The Personal Success Seminar that people participate in to evaluate their strongest color type (personality type) encourages participants to understand their own behavior and personality through a self-assessment. Once participants understand their personality type, then they can be open to the diverse personality types that they encounter both in their professional and personal lives. Often, the AHA moment that comes from participation in the seminar can lead to an understanding of ourselves and others. Only when we truly understand why we behave the way we do, can we attempt to change it , for example when we need to communicate with someone who has a different color spectrum than ourselves. We often need to rely on strengths or realize where the areas are that we need to work on in order to truly communicate with others in a way that they will be receptive. Because True Colors grew from theories such as Myers Briggs, we can tie the two together and use both for more effective communication in the workplace.
